For years, I was an oddity with regard to firearms.

I owned… (pause for quick count)…9 guns, 7 of which still functioned 100%. All were from WWII. Yet I owned no ammunition nor had I ever fired a gun. Odd huh?

Well this year all that changed. For the first time I shot a shotgun at a trap shooting range. I did very well, hitting 16 of 25 and coming in 2nd of 12 or so people, many of which had done this sport before. Yea I’m a little proud of that. Here’s an action shot of me hitting one of the targets:

Then I went with my friends to the local shooting range and shot a 9mm and a .45 cal handgun for the first time.
LOVED IT. I also found I was very accurate with handguns:

  • From 21 feet, I can put every shot within a 6 inch diameter circle. i.e. I can hit your shirt’s breast pocket.
  • From 75 feet, I hit 95% of my shots on target: a silhouette of a human torso. i.e. I will hit you, somewhere.

Still, I owned no live ammunition, until my birthday.

My girlfriend bought me a new (my first non-60yr old gun) Smith and Wesson .40 caliber hand gun, complete with two full clips of ammunition.

Yowsers! Now I own a deadly weapon!

Anywho, here she is:

Just to be clear, I have it locked and in a very safe place. I will be taking the KY State concealed carry test in October, but I was pleased (go 2nd amendment!) to learn that in KY:

  • No registration is required to own a handgun
  • No permit is needed to keep one in your home, business or vehicle (in glove box only)
  • In order to carry a concealed weapon on yourself, or in your car (under your seat, for example) you must simply take a 6 hour class, and pass an accuracy test.

Go constitution!

Anyway, I was initially a little intimidated by owning a ‘real’ (has ammo) gun, but now I’m glad I have it. Obviously I hope I never have to use it, but I like knowing I have the option. I will be hitting the range soon to test out how she handles :)

  • SWEEEEEEETTTT!!!!

What's crazy is that I own this exact same gun. Along with a few others. :)
